Canada welcomes all students who aspire to study in the country. Over 90,000 students every year come to Canada to study the English and French language. A student without a study permit is only allowed to study in Canada for six months. If you plan to study in Canada for a longer period, you need to hold a study permit or student visa.
You are eligible for a student visa or study permit if you comply with the following conditions:
- You have an acceptance letter from a Canadian educational institution.
- You must have enough money to sustain and finance your stay and education in Canada. You need to have a budget for your return airfare and enough cash to finance the need of your family while you are in Canada.
- You need to pass a medical and criminal or security check.
A student permit allows you to work on campus part-time without a work permit. Once granted with a student permit, you may apply for an open work permit, which is valid for three years if you study for at least two years at an approved institution. This will allow you to work off campus 20 hours a week during school sessions and 40 hours a week during school breaks. This gives you the chance to earn while you are completing your course.
